Join me for an indigo party on March 29 at my studio (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.)! Slowly refresh your wardrobe and household items with hand-crafted indigo vats. Indigo is a special dye made inside an oxygen-free environment called a “vat.” It’s what makes your jeans blue, and has a global history that stretches through Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

Spring provides the perfect opportunity to work with indigo in Tucson, because the warm temperatures naturally warm the indigo vat which helps to maintain it. I hope everyone will come! Your participation contributes toward maintaining the vats.

Stay the whole time or just come for an hour, it’s up to you.

How Our Indigo Party Will Work

You bring up to 1 pound of fiber (a couple shirts or a few bandanas or some fabric), come to my studio, and I will run you through the process of dyeing your stuff with indigo. You will then dye to your heart’s content and leave with beautiful blue pieces to love.

My art studio will be open for touring at the same time and you’re welcome to browse and purchase art and scarves as well.

NOTE: This is not a workshop or a class. I will help you, but the structure will be loose and fun. It’s an opportunity to get to use my dyes and make friends :)

Materials Provided

  • Indigo vats

  • Twine, rubber bands, clothes pins, plastic tubes, and other essentials for creating shibori prints.

  • Tongs and towels

  • gloves

  • Tea, water, music, treats, and nice vibes :)

Guidelines

  • Visitors may bring their own items to dye, up to 1 lbs per each person. If the event doesn’t fill up, everyone can bring more fiber. If you’re unsure of the weight of your items, we can weigh them onsite. Items that weigh over 1 lbs might still be dyeable with certain techniques, and I’m happy to consult. There may be dye leftover to dye additional items.

  • All dyeable items must be made of NATURAL FIBERS such as cotton, linen, silk, wool.

  • If you have a pair of dish gloves laying around, it might be helpful to bring those as well if you’d like to dip your whole hand in the vat (it’s a bit easier and very fun).

  • Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained.

  • Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen :) You’re welcome to hide out inside my studio if you need a sun break.

Liability

  • All visitors will need to sign a liability waiver.

  • All participants must be over 18-years-old.

My studio address will be emailed out to those who register Thursday. I hope to see you!
