DYE WORKSHOPS

I teach public and private natural dye workshops throughout Arizona in all seasons. These beginner-level classes introduce broad audiences to the wonderful art and science of natural dyeing through hands-on projects and patient instruction. I craft each workshop to visually captivate and provide an enriching and restorative experience for all.

WHY NATURAL DYE

Dye plants are nature’s art supplies.

A natural dye workshop provides the perfect setting to indulge in the creative potential of the natural world. Everyone approaches the process a little differently and everyone ends up with an original piece, to wear, gift, or treasure. Imagine turning off your phone for an hour to play with plants and silk. The simmering dye pots waft the gentle aroma of softened plants while you or your guests enjoy a mug of tea and learn about the wonderful blossoms and shrubs that adorn the tables. Then, the magical moment happens: your people unwrap their projects and discover the brilliant colors achieved by blossoms and leaves.

FAQs

  • I design most of my workshops to allow participants to take home an end-product to treasure, whether their own art supplies or a finished product such as a scarf, bandana or bag.

I also allow participants to take home teaching materials such as beautifully designed instruction sheets and booklets, to recreate the activity at home.

I also offer additional take-home treats like dye kits, tailored to the preferences of your group and dependent upon the size and budget of the group.

Classes can be designed to focus as much or as little on the science or history of natural dyeing as your group requires.

  • I can accommodate as few as 2 people and up to 50 people, with ample time to prepare and realistic outcomes regarding plants and end-products. Due to the nature of natural dyeing, the size of the group determines the type of workshop. Natural dyeing is a slow art form that requires a lot of behind-the-scenes prep to make a workshop seamless and enjoyable for participants, so knowing the size of a group well in advance (1-3 months) allows me time to create the best workshop possible for large groups.

  • There is a natural dye workshop for every kind of space and every kind of person. I ensure the safety of my client’s spaces by bringing lots of protective coverings for tables and drop cloths for floors if necessary. Trays can be provided to carry wet items to water sources to prevent drips. Some venues I’ve worked with have also provided their own protection for floors such as plastic sheeting. Whatever your situation, I want to ensure that you and your group enjoy playing with plant dyes without worry.

  • As little as 60 minutes and up to 3 hours, depending on the workshop or event. A workshop typically lasts about 1.5-2 hours.

  • In all situations, the more notice I have the better. Smaller groups can book one month in advance, pending my availability. It helps me to have 2-3 months’ notice for larger groups (more than 15 people). Certain exceptions can be made pending availability. Rush fees may apply.

  • Public workshops cost between $85-$200 depending on the scope and length of the class.

For private classes, please reach out below with as much information about your dream workshop as possible, and I will provide you with a proposal that includes a detailed breakdown of costs.

  • While you are welcome to visit my studio (please do!), I do not teach there. I prefer to come to you or to help you find a beauitful venue that meets everyone's needs.

  • Please reach out to me here with as many details about you, your group, your dates/times, needs, and dreams and I will be in touch as soon as possible.

  • I often teach variations on the following topics:

    Bundle Dyeing

The art of wrapping plants into fiber to create abstract prints.

    Eco-Printing

Using leaves and alchemy to print defined leaf prints onto fiber.

    Shibori

The original tie-dye! Fold fabric to create beautiful geometric prints.

    Milk Painting

Painting fun designs with milk that appear when steeped in plant dye.

I've also taught flower pounding, rust dyeing, indigo dyeing, and botanical ink making/painting.
