Open Dye Session: Feb 15 | Eucalyptus, and Indigo
February 15 | 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Where: 4th Ave. Coalition Space: 4th Ave Coalition Space: 311 E 7th St, Tucson, AZ 85705
Available Dyes:
Eucalyptus Leaf (gold and green)
Eucalyptus Bark (peach-tan, grey, and mauve)
Date-reduced indigo (blue)
Join us for a celebration of colors in three natural dyes. Slowly refresh your wardrobe and household items with hand-crafted natural dyes. Open dye hours allow you to dye at your own pace and socialize without turning your own kitchen into a dye studio.
These purposefully low-cost open dye sessions allow participants to slowly refresh their wardrobes and household items with handcrafted natural dyes. Bring up to one yard of fabric, paper, some t-shirts, yarn, surprise me.
Stay the whole time or just come by, it’s up to you. Mix and match your dyes to build different colors.
Participants who know how to mordant fiber or bind their fiber (with soy milk) are encouraged to do so ahead of time. Otherwise, please plan to arrive as close to 1 p.m. as possible for a group mordant. Animal fibers (silk and wool) we will mordant with alum.
Participants may use the indigo vat without treating your fiber.
New Location
4th Ave Coalition Space: 311 E 7th St, Tucson, AZ 85705
In an effort to generate even more community around natural dyeing, I’m trying out the 4th Ave. Coalition Space as a potential venue for these events. Located off of 4th Avenue on 7th Street, there should be ample parking and the space is accessible for those using mobility devices.
It’s also a HUGE space with tons of resources, so we should have lots of ability to spread out, more so than at my studio or home, where I’ve hosted these in the past.
Tea will of course be provided. You’re always welcome but not expected to bring treats for the community to share.
Cost
Very openly, I don’t make a ton of money from these events nor do I expect to, but I do try to cover the costs of my time, materials, and the space. Hosting at a public space means additional hourly costs. To outweigh those costs and keep the event accessible for all interested in natural dyeing, I’ve raised the price of this event from $40 to $45. To counterbalance any hardship, I’m also adding two free scholarship spots.
Scholarship Spot Guidelines: Limited to 2 people. I would prefer to give these spots to folks who make less than $30,000 a year, service industry workers, students, and/or those on a very fixed income. If that’s you, please register! No questions asked :)
About Open Dye Sessions
I make and provide beautiful natural dyes and you bring your own fiber to dye at your own pace.
Participants may bring up to 1 yard of fabric (double folded) or an assortment of clothes, bandanas, household items, etc.
If you’ve never dyed with natural dyes before, I will run you through how to dip your fiber into the pots and indigo vat. You will then dye to your heart’s content and leave with beautiful pieces to love.
NOTE: This is not a structured workshop or a class. I will help you, but the structure will be loose and fun. It’s an opportunity to get to use the dyes and make friends :)
Participants Provide
Up to 1 pound of fiber per person (cloth, yarn, paper, wood, clothes, all welcome)
Your own dish gloves
Materials Provided
3 Natural Dyes
Soy milk for binding fiber.
Iron mordant for making dark colors
Twine, rubber bands, clothes pins, plastic tubes, and other essentials for creating shibori prints.
Tongs and towels
Tea, water, music, treats, and nice vibes :)
Guidelines
I don’t really enforce how much fiber you bring, but please be mindful so that everyone who registers may access the dyes. Natural dyes do exhaust and run out.
All dyeable items must be made of NATURAL FIBERS such as cotton, linen, silk, wool.
Please wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting stained.
Participants may come at any time during the dyeing session and leave when ready.
BYO Dishgloves for the indigo vat!
Cancelation Policy
Due to the nature of being a very small business, I’m not able to offer refunds on classes at this time. To avoid needing to cancel, please check your schedule ahead of signing up for a class. If a class is booked for an additional date, I’m happy to move a participant to the later date to accommodate for life’s unexpected challenges. If your schedule interferes with a class, please give me as much notice as possible so that I might fill your spot. Special considerations will be made on a case by case basis for true emergencies (ex. sudden hospitalization, family or pet emergencies, or natural or man-made disasters, etc).
Liability
All participants must be over 18-years-old.
Note on sales tax: Currently, my website platform (Squarespace) does not allow me to turn off sales tax for service-based products. If you have an Arizona zip code attached to your credit card, the site will automatically charge you sales tax.
