I began making collages because I had amassed a huge collection of naturally dyed paper as a byproduct of dyeing silk scarves. It felt only natural to begin applying this paper to my illustrative work, and I still pull from this original inventory when creating collages, further dyeing each piece of paper to fit the needs of a piece. I primarily dye drawing paper, but I also enjoy working with mulberry paper, mango leaf paper, and 100% cotton paper.
I will work a piece in layers to keep things manageable.
I like working on tiny pieces on a big table piled with paper scraps. It's a delightful mess full of potential discovery.
Canvases with a base layer, ready for collaging.
All the paper gets hung up to dry, then pressed flat.
Sometimes I'll dye paper using shibori techniques for texture.
I try to keep colors organized, it's a losing battle.
