Private Indigo Workshop - 4 person minimum

from $300.00

Indigo is a special dye made inside an oxygen-free environment called a “vat.” It’s what makes your jeans blue, and has a global history that stretches through Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

My semi-natural vats use synthetic indigo (the same as natural indigo but made in a lab) and natural ingredients such as fruit and pickling lime to create the right environment to maintain a vat. These vats are a great introduction to working with indigo and ensure results for beginners. No harsh or toxic chemicals are used, I rely on my own recipes to create a vat.

Participants will create a vat and dye with two lovely variants of indigo: one made with dates and one made with iron oxide and create beautiful blue shades.

I love hosting groups at my studio and hope to introduce you to indigo in the most thoughtful and peaceful way possible.

Workshop Includes:

  • Introduction to the science of an indigo vat and the materials used to create one.

  • Instruction on how to use an indigo vat to achieve the best color results and maintain the quality of the vat.

  • Ample time to dye and experiment with pattern using shibori materials.

Fiber will be provided but participants may bring their own fiber to dye, including clothing or homewares. All fibers must be natural (cotton, linen, silk, wool, rayon, lyocel, etc).

Materials Provided

  • Indigo vats

  • Twine, rubber bands, clothes pins, plastic tubes, and other essentials for creating shibori prints.

  • Tongs and towels

  • Tea, water, music, treats, and nice vibes :)

Location

My studio is located on a residential property in the heart of Midtown, blocks away from Monsoon Chocolate. It’s a peaceful setting off-set from traffic. I teach these workshops outside, but participants are welcome to poke around my studio and view fine art and scarves.
